SSL Certificates Explained: Why Your Website Needs HTTPS in 2024

Learn why SSL certificates are essential for website security and SEO. Discover different types of SSL certificates and how to choose the right one for your site.

SSL certificates have become essential for all websites, not just e-commerce sites. They encrypt data transmission between your website and visitors, protecting sensitive information from hackers and building trust with your audience.

Google now considers HTTPS as a ranking factor, meaning websites with SSL certificates may rank higher in search results. Additionally, browsers display security warnings for non-HTTPS sites, which can deter visitors and harm your credibility.

There are several types of SSL certificates available. Domain Validated (DV) certificates are the most basic and affordable option, suitable for blogs and small websites. Organization Validated (OV) certificates provide additional verification and are ideal for business websites.

Extended Validation (EV) certificates offer the highest level of security and display your company name in the browser's address bar. These are recommended for e-commerce sites and organizations handling sensitive customer data.

Wildcard SSL certificates secure your main domain and all its subdomains with a single certificate. This option is cost-effective if you have multiple subdomains and need comprehensive protection.

Most web hosting providers now offer free SSL certificates through Let's Encrypt, making it easier than ever to secure your website. However, paid certificates often include additional features like warranty protection and dedicated support.

Installation is typically handled by your hosting provider, but you should verify that your certificate is properly configured and that all pages redirect to HTTPS versions.
